Whether it’s watching the latest season of My Hero Academia or binging Naruto for the 14th time, we all have that one series that really helps scratch our anime addiction. But, despite how amazing these series are, their very nature means we’re at their mercy, with their long and often complicated story arcs.
Sometimes we need a little something simple, fresh and light to help cleanse the palette between binges or to help get our minds off the chaos happening all around us, and this is where the no commitment needed episodic anime can really work their magic. These anime are series that can shine thanks to their loosely related episodes that viewers can just dive into and enjoy in one-episode sittings, no strings attached.
Well, then, this week on our trip down the Otaku Rabbit Hole, we have three incredible episodic anime for you guys to check out that can really help relax the mind and tune out the stress. Without further ado, let’s jump right into it!
Squid Girl
Why not start this list off with a bang with one of our favourite episodic anime of all time, the fish-pun-aplenty Squid Girl!!
This anime follows the titular protagonist Squid girl, warrior of the deep, as she begins her Ink-vasion of the human world… and fails miserably at every turn. The series is a great comedy if you love fish puns and genuinely great (if a little awkward) physical comedy.
Not only does Squid Girl have the potential to tickle your funny bone, but some episodes can also really hit you in the gut with majorly emotional moments that would bring a tear to the eye of even the most hardened anime fan – it’s pretty great!
The characters are lovable, sweet and downright goofy, which just adds to the overall charm abundant in Squid Girl. You’ll find a lot to love in this anime, and you’ll soon get used to the fish puns, I promise!
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt
Now, from the family-friendly comedy of Squid Girl, we move on to the R-rated raunch fest that is Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt!! Honestly, if you’ve never heard of this anime before, you’re missing out. If you’re of a delicate disposition, I advise maybe skipping this one, but if you don’t mind a little dirty joke here and there then this anime should be an absolute must watch!
Panty and Stocking are angels that have been cast out from heaven for their dirty deeds. The only way to get back is by earning heaven coins, which is done by defeating ghosts. Sounds simple enough, right? Well, for these angels, nothing is quite so simple!
Whether it’s an underwear race gone wrong or the story of vengeful sperm, there’s a lot to unpack and laugh at in this anime! The characters are lust and gluttony personified and, yes, that’s just part of the charm.
Panty and Stocking with Garterbelt definitely won’t be to everyone’s taste, but it makes for one wild ride that you’ll enjoy from start to finish, all while leaving you wanting more!
Restaurant to Another World
The last anime on our list is the relaxing and comforting Restaurant to Another World. At the moment, with all the chaotic mess happening across the world, we could all do with a little comfort food to take the edge off, and Restaurant to Another World is the perfect blend of elements to help unwind.
This anime centres around the Nekoya restaurant, a simple eatery by day with a magical secret. Every Saturday night, the restaurant opens its doors to the magical inhabitants of another world. Each visitor is introduced in their own stand-alone episode, where the story is always centred around the food.
From sick princesses eating sweet and fluffy “clouds” to a dragon with an unhealthy obsession with beef stew, this anime is endearing and heartwarming in equal measure thanks to its lovable characters and warm and homely atmosphere.
There’s a lot to love about Restaurant to Another World, and with its many courses, you’ll definitely have fun sinking your teeth into this great episodic anime!
